Tuesday January 3... a quiet day

In 2020, one of my New Year's resolutions was, "Respect both motion and stillness." Today's quiet events remind me of that. Today was quite still -- and I am appreciating and respecting that.

For those of you who have been longtime recipients of my annual Christmas Letters, you might notice that this year's letter did not include any New Years Resolutions. That was intentional. In thinking about everything, I decided that my life is pretty good. I don't need any resolutions to improve it. I am just going to appreciate and enjoy events as they unfold. Maybe that, in itself, is a resolution?

I got to the clinic early today and it was quiet. With Manisha and Siras on leave, and the 4th year students taking exams all week, it seemed especially quiet. I mostly worked on my laptop preparing upcoming lecture presentations.

It probably seems like I am obsessed with food. I am really not. However, I am interested in this food -- it is soooo different that my prior American diet. Before I came here, my American colleague, Bob Malloy (who briefly visited here in 2018), told me that he ate his meals at the Dhulikhel Hospital cafeteria  (canteen) each day -- but that it was unlike any US hospital cafeteria. Now that I am here, I understand his explanation -- and fully agree. Also, when my workload is not super-interesting, lunch becomes a highlight of the day.

I don't know what these are. I tried one a long time ago. They are spicy and have a big stone/pit.

This was my lunch plate today. The bowl contains "Dal," which is a lentil soup that is a Nepali staple (served with rice). It is unusually mild in flavor compared to the many spicy dishes. You will notice that the cauliflower I observed being prepared in yesterday's blog did make into today's lunch.

After lunch I observed the cooks preparing tomorrows ingredients. Look at all of those garlic cloves being peeled. These peeled roots, I believe are Taro -- but are locally termed Yam. After peeling, they are cubed/diced and stewed. After cooking, they have a consistency like a potato.

This was another delightful sunset from my room... Very peaceful. I am now in for the night, ready to do some reading. I am presently reading, The Checklist Manifesto, by Atul Gawande, and Track of the Cat by Nevada Barr.
