Saturday Dec 10 in Dhulikhel, Nepal
This morning I awoke without an alarm -- at my regular time. I made a cup of instant coffee and started my day.
I worked at my computer all morning and then went for a walkabout in the afternoon. These are some of the great views I saw.
Then I found some kind of very old temple area.
There was loud music playing there. You may be able to listen to it here:
Near there I saw these locked enclosures with iron bars. At first I thought they could be jail cells. But I think they are some kind of shrines that are protected by the iron bars.
As I continued on my walk, I saw a bus go by with 2 goats on its roof! I have seen that already once before here. I guess that is how you travel with your goats?
I visited an ATM and withdrew some more rupees. Then I found an electric shop and bought a new fluorescent LED tube for my room. The light over my bed has never worked and it looked old and was covered in dust -- so I assumed it was dead. The new tube cost $2.50 US. The shop owner showed me that it worked before I bought it and he wrote on the tube to signify he gave a 1 year warranty. Later, when I got back to my room, the power was out so I couldn't test it out. When the power came back on, I found that the tube wouldn't light -- so it must be the fixture or the switch -- and not the tube. Oh well, it was worth a few $$ to try to fix it.
When I first moved to this room, It came with 2 pillows -- but they are really soft and flat. Today I passed a shop that sold fabrics and bedding. I saw they had pillows so I pointed at one and bought it. It cost $3.50. The woman put it in a bag and handed it too me -- it was really heavy! This pillow is super dense and firm. I'm not sure what it is filled with, but it is solid! Now I can sit up in bed and read. I took this pic of the woman's shop. You can see her bed, so I think she probably lives here too.
Because the entire bathroom is my shower, I need "shower sandals." I brought a pair of sandals for that reason, and they work ok for, but they have a toe strap so I can't wear socks with them when I am lounging in my room. Today I bought a new pair of sandals that I can wear with my wool socks. It was a challenge finding a size big enough for my US Size 10.5 foot. These cost 300 rupees (about $2.50 US)
I bought some bottled water a few other food sundries and then ordered some momos from one of the small restaurants near the hospital gate. They only had vegetable momos. Most places have veg, chicken and "buff." Buff is water buffalo. I was told by one of the physicians that many buffalo are slaughtered because they are sick with rabies, so she advised not eating any "buff." Anyway, I ordered the veg. The minimum order is 10 pieces. I asked if I could get a half order -- no, 10 is the minimum. I was told it would take 5 minutes to ready them, so I sat down and wait and snapped some pics of the place. I assume they had to steam these to warm them up. They also prepared these bags of green and red sauce. I wasn't bold enough to try the sauce. This order cost me 100 rupees (maybe $0.75 US). I took these to go and ate them in my room. They were good, but I could only eat 5. I saved the leftovers, but without a microwave it may be hard to warm them.
In addition to my scheduled Dec 24 presentation, I am now also speaking for the Nepal Dental Association's NepDent 2023 meeting in early January.
